Instruction Quality

ZGA Marketing Letter (Revised) – June 2018

To Prospective ZGA Clients-

“Why is golf instruction from Lee Woodard so effective?”
This is a  question that the Zone Golf Academy receives from most of our new clients. There are several reasons for Lee’s effective teachings:

  • For 25+ years, Lee was a rocket scientist and developed software/systems to analyze ballistic missile re-entry data and satellite performance data. He was formally trained/educated to optimize systems and analyze performance data.
  • Another 7 years were spent as CIO and Sr. VP for Lakeshore Learning Company, where he was formally trained on learning theory and teaching theory.
  • Throughout the 33 years of working the system analysis ‘puzzles’, he doubled as a high level manager focusing on mentoring/teaching managers and technical people.
  • After his retirement from the technical arena in 1999, Lee launched his third career in the golf industry.  He studied all aspects of golf and golf performance, developed his personal golf game, and invested ~$70k in high-tech/low-tech equipment and his  golf training/education.  He was  mentored by master instructors/trainers who still work with players on the PGA Tour.  They taught him how to play at a high level and mentored him on how to teach.  His approach worked: he became better than scratch (actually a plus 1) at age 63!
  • He was also mentored by his neighbor, Tom Pernice Jr. (a 30+ year veteran of the PGA Tour), over a 10 year period. Lee also had the opportunity to work directly with Tom’s full swing instructors and short game/putting instructor.  Near daily Q&A sessions with Tom as well as observing him on the course and on the practice facility have been priceless.
  • Lee has done extensive study on change theory, stress reduction, relaxation techniques, and positive psychology.
  • He also benefited from being in the PGA Program for 5+ years.
  • Lee was co-founder and President of Zen Golf International, a premier mental game company whose client list included Vijay Singh, Hunter Mahan, David Toms, Christy Kerr, and other pros and top amateurs. After 3 years with Zen Golf, he left to establish his Zone Golf Academy (in 2006) where golf techniques, the mental game, and golf conditioning are taught.
  • In 2011, Lee launched his collegiate men’s golf team performance coaching career. He coached the College of the Desert golf team (the 2012 State Champions) and later coached at El Camino College in Torrance when he relocated to the beach area in 2014.
  • He is a hybrid golf instructor in that he teaches technique, the mental game, and the physical game (conditioning/training) depending on the client’s needs and objectives. We also have a network of other master instructors/trainers with the PGA tour in these three areas that our students can use if there is a need.
  • Lee’s golf game has had some challenges in the last 7 years with 6 injuries resulting in 5 major surgeries plus 3 minor surgery procedures. The golf that he played during those 7 years was pain-filled and restricted with the limitations of the rehab programs. But those personal challenges helped improve his teaching ability, especially with senior golfers. And he continues to learn from daily review of videos of PGA Tour players and research.
